Our American Heroes: The Stories behind the Fight for Freedom and Democracy This book is not about the author. This book is not about the battle. This book is about military members who are now veterans. Their memories are about some of the most legendary battles as well as their own private struggles. The recollections of these veterans cover an array of experiences around the world—one of the first female pilots in the U.S. Army Air Corps; a survivor of the Bataan Death March; POWs from WWII and Korea; an Ohio National Guardsman at Kent State; survivors, fighters, and patriots from Pearl Harbor, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Their families share their heroic stories of service to the world’s freedom, as well as their frustration and disappointment with the VA bureaucracy or lack of information-sharing practices about their entitled benefits. The efforts of caregivers in enabling their veterans to have the best quality of life possible—spouses, mothers, children, guardians/fiduciaries, healthcare professionals, and the grandmother who had both her son and granddaughter deployed—speak volumes of their commitment and unconditional sacrifices. This collection of their stories is the author’s continued privilege of serving the veterans who have enabled this great nation to stand guard in the world and assure the right to be free. Read on with respect and compassion.

My Father was a WW2 veteran and these stories were so touching and educational it truly helped me to understand what he went through and that he had PTSD. Knowing what heros these veterans are was moving and very much left me wanting to appreciate their efforts more. I will thank every person in uniform from now on!!!

Miguel has touched on an area few veterans talk about openly. As a veteran with over 24 years of active duty in the US Army, I find myself sitting on the side line due to my disabilities incurred while serving my country. Mr. Reece adds voice to those of us with our own untold stories. The pain, disillusion, and difficult adjustments we must make when we not only leave the military but leave our physical selves behind. This book should be given to service members who are still coming to terms with the changes in their quality of life. A must read for our political machine before committing our young men and women to a war with no clear objective. Bravo Miguel!

Miguel Reese is a veteran the cares deeply for other veterans. He takes us on a journey to explore the impact of service injuries to a broad range of characters. From the Bataan Death March survivor to the Iraq war vet with a traumatic brain injury, each story shows us the struggles so many face after their service ends. From dealing with a mindless bureaucracy, to being preyed upon by a variety of scammers, con-artist and helpful “friends”. But at the same time they inspire us. We as a nation own so much to the people that have given greatly.

The Disabled Veteran’s Story is a Book that all Veteran and their family would be extremely proud of, I know of my ordeal with waiting 15 years to get some help and assistant from the Veteran Administration, I had the great inspiration from reading this same Book, The Disabled Veteran’s Story, it was excellent and touch on all aspect of various Veteran’s Story and coping with the Stonewalling that the V.A., seems to give me and countless other Veteran’s, I am hoping that other Veteran’s also have the same opportunity I had, and still experience this book is excellent and a must read for all Veteran’s and their family, it’s that good. I want to personally Thank the Author Major Miguel Reece, Retired for sharing this with us.

Major Reece, The pleasure and the opportunity for us to connect through your book was not a coincidence. In my opinion this was God’s intervention. We meet people in our life for a reason and this time in my life was perfect, because I had the time to read a book other than my professional books on education or leadership. A time to gain a little more knowledge on the military and their vets. Thank you for providing so many of us a vivid and explicit point of view from our vets and their challenges claiming their entitled benefits. I have many family members that are vets such as my dad, my only niece, my only nephew and many others. I will add your book to my Christmas list for family members and friends. This book is not only informative but is a resource book and guide for our vets and their families. Thank you for responding to my calls. May God continue to bless you with good health, financial security and the gift of writing. A friend and a fan always, gigi Jackson

The voices on the sacrifices are such an emotional rollercoaster. I just could not stop reading the stories. I believe every reader will see himself or herself in one or a couple of the stories or wonder how the author was able to get those individual to share such a part of their lives with him. It is a true example of respect and trust in who he is or how much he value who those individuals are. Only the reader can formulate their own opinion on the value of those stories. I’m proud as well as feel such a sense of gratitude to read all about the difference we, as a nation, have made in the world and how long we have sacrificed so much. The stories of the family sacrifices are truly a hard but great read that everyone needs to read about.

I love this author’s passion for public service. This internal drive of his made him publish this collection of military veteran stories in book format. As an avid bookworm, I wasn’t disappointed with this book because it told of the personal struggles that each military veteran had to endure in order to survive and thrive in life as a military personnel in our country’s armed forces. This is why I am eternally grateful for the sacrifices they made in life and hope I can do the same in time as well.

I am truly appalled the way our veterans are being treated. Kudos to Miguel for his compassion, caring and his relentless desire to help his vet clients in unraveling all the red tape in our broken system which is supposed to be ministering to our vets. What a shame Miguel had to retire due to health reasons.

  15. Janice Buchanan

A excellent book and great author

This is not a fictional book! The stories that Miguel Reece shares from his interviews with veterans are moving. They are stories that fellow Americans need to hear, but which are often difficult for the veterans or their families to share.

At the time Reece gathered the stories, he was working with the Veterans Administration and specifically with disabled veterans.

As an advocate for the veteran, he has heard their story and had to confront caregivers, families, and the Veterans Administration to get the best attention and assistance for the veteran. It is sad how people will cheerfully take advantage of someone who has served and suffered. And sadder when the people who are in authority are casual about tracking information. Those are personal decisions and may be inspired by frustration with responsible systems who do not communicate. In multiple stories, the veterans and caregivers were required to track documentation on their own for more than one service, along with taking care of the tough day to day pain of disability. The way they were treated was an added discouraging burden.

A thread of the story comes over more than once — when we can put a man on the moon, why can’t we keep track of veterans’ paper work. To hope that all who work within the Veterans Administration held the mission and compassionate views of Miguel Reece is probably asking too much. But, it would be more honorable to America if there were more who held this philosophy.

I highly recommend this book. It is about WAR and could be considered graphic in description of experiences. There are some veterans whose experiences do not leave them politically correct or forgiving. Readers will have to respect that each is one man’s story — truly his story and honor that story. It is wrong to second guess the experiences of these Veterans. They have been as brave as they were called to be and I will honor them.

It’s not elegant or polished. It’s probably not politically correct. But it IS a book that should be required reading for every American – especially those employed by the V.A.!!! It will break your heart & enrage you in equal amounts. A true eye opener. Thank you for your service & your compassion, Mr. Reece!

  18. Mike Caldwell

Very interesting reading about tough times that veterans had and are having I life. Didn’t realize until had personal experience with veterans administration. God bless all who serve.

  19. Darrick Huston
